Falling asleep isn't a light switch so much as a slowdown. Your brain has to dial down its own activity, and a big part of that job falls to GABA, the chemical messenger that works like your nervous system's brakes. When stress has you running hot, those brakes don't engage as easily, which is how you end up lying there exhausted and wide awake at the same time.
Kava works right at that sticking point. Kavain, the most studied of kava's active compounds, boosts the activity of GABA-A receptors in the brain (Chua et al., 2016).* Rather than knocking you out, that support helps your nervous system downshift on its own terms, so sleep can arrive when it's ready.*
Two ways to wind down with FOCL
Both of the offerings below are built around kava, and which one fits depends on how you like to end your day.
Kava Spritz: an evening ritual in a glass
Kava Spritz is built on a full 300mg serving of KavaKalm™ Plus Noble Kava, a premium extract that's lab tested and held to a consistent 30% kavalactone content. It's joined by ashwagandha (200mg) to help keep cortisol, your body's main stress hormone, in balance, L-theanine (150mg) for a relaxed headspace without drowsiness, and lion's mane (300mg) for mental clarity.*
Mix a scoop with sparkling water and fresh lime earlier in the evening, and the end of your day becomes a ritual you look forward to instead of another scroll session, all without the alcohol that's notorious for fragmenting sleep.* Spritz is designed for occasional enjoyment, much like a nightcap, so it shines on the evenings you want a special treat.
Kava Gummies: the nightstand option
Our feel-good Kava Gummies combine a 300mg dose of kava extract and 100mg of calming L-theanine in a juicy gummy you can grab without leaving your pajamas behind. The smooth mellowness usually sets in around the 30-minute mark, making them easy to line up with your bedtime.* Plus, they're low-calorie, so there's nothing heavy sitting in your stomach when you lie down.
Overall, whichever format you choose, it's worth a quick conversation with your healthcare provider beforehand, especially if you're on medication or are pregnant or nursing.
How kava differs from melatonin
Melatonin is a timing tool. It tells your internal clock that it's nighttime, which comes in handy when the clock itself is off, like after a red-eye flight or a switch to night shifts. If your clock is working fine and your racing mind is the real problem, more melatonin won't do much.
A kava sleep aid tackles the other half of the equation: the mental and physical tension that keeps you up even when it's plenty late. That difference is also why the two aren't direct substitutes, and why it's smart to get a green light from your doctor before combining kava with any other sleep supplement.
Does kava help sleep? What the research shows
One randomized, placebo-controlled trial tested kava in 61 adults whose sleep was disrupted by tension and restlessness. Over four weeks, the group taking a daily kava extract reported better sleep quality and felt more restored after sleeping than the placebo group (Lehrl, 2004).* For anyone researching kava for insomnia, that's the key detail. Namely, the benefit showed up when stress and tension were the ones driving the sleepless nights.
A smaller pilot study points in the same direction. Among 24 adults with stress-related sleeplessness, six weeks of daily kava was linked to improvements in both stress and sleep, including how quickly people fell asleep and how they felt on waking (Wheatley, 2001).* That study didn't include a placebo group, so it's best read as supporting evidence rather than the final word.
Two caveats are worth keeping in mind. Both studies used specific standardized extracts at their respective doses, so the results don't automatically apply to every kava product out there. Also, kava counts as wind-down support, not a dedicated sleep formula. When the goal is falling asleep and staying asleep, our THC+ Sleep Gummies are built for exactly that.* If you prefer a drinkable format, our Night Magnesium+ lets you whip up a delicious chocolatey nightcap.
How to time kava before bed
Timing depends on which format you reach for. Kava Spritz fits best as part of your evening wind-down, so you can sip it slowly and let the calm build, typically over 20 to 40 minutes.* Kava Gummies are easier to time tightly, and taking them about 30 minutes to an hour before lights-out gives the kavalactones a head start.*
Most people notice tension easing within that first half hour, but the bigger payoff from kava nighttime use comes from pairing it with habits that already make sleep easier, like dimming the lights, putting screens away, and keeping a fairly stable bedtime. Kava helps your nervous system slow down, and those habits give it a clear runway. But above all else, don't combine kava with alcohol or sedating medications. All of them act on your nervous system, and stacking them can amplify the effects in unpredictable ways.
