300 vs. 1000 mg: What CBD Dosage Is Best for You?

Whether you’re focusing on calming your mind, improving your sleep schedule or easing sore muscles, you won’t find any shortage of CBD products in all kinds of dosages. And with products on the market that range from 10 mg of CBD to more than 1,000 mg — our new 1,000 mg CBD Drops included — it can be more than a little bit confusing to figure out where to start. More options mean it’s more important than ever for CBD users to get familiar with dosages, from reading the label to anticipating the vibe. Here, we break down exactly what you need to know.


Decoding Dosages

A huge part of CBD strength boils down to the dose you take and a product’s label is your best bet for anticipating that strength. Any reputable CBD product will clearly list the amount of CBD it contains right on the label, measured in milligrams (mg). Typically, this larger number — usually in the hundreds or thousands — represents the amount of CBD in the entire package. You should also find supplement facts (similar to nutrition facts on food) which list the product’s serving size, number of servings per container, milligrams of CBD per serving and additional ingredients aside from CBD (MCT oil is one of our favorite extras in FOCL Drops because of its own benefits and ability to help your body absorb CBD quicker).

You’ll also want to know the concentration of CBD, often listed in milligrams per milliliter (mg/mL). In regular FOCL CBD Drops with 300 mg of CBD per bottle, for instance, one full dropper contains 1 mL worth of tincture (this 1 mL dropper size is common practice for tincture dosage, too). That single dropperful is one serving, and there are 30 servings per container. So that means that each dropperful contains 10 mg of CBD.


Go Low and Start Slow

Everyone is different, but as a general rule of thumb, many CBD newbies comfortably test the waters with about 20 to 40 mg of CBD per day. You may have heard the wise old CBD-community mantra “Go low and start slow,” which simply means that you should start with small doses and pay close, careful attention to how your body responds before increasing your dosage. Speaking to Healthline in 2019, doctor of pharmacy Lindsay Slowiczek supports this notion: “It’s important to start with a low dose until you know how your body will react to CBD.”

“Low and slow” is such a great rule of thumb because it accounts for how differently each person’s body may react to CBD and errs on the side of safety. Your unique body weight and body chemistry — and even your diet — can affect how CBD makes you feel.


 Increasing Your Dose

Of course, slow and steady go together like peanut butter and jelly. If you start with 20 mg per day and are comfortable with how that makes you feel, you might be comfortable increasing your daily dosage by about 5 mg after a week or so. You can continue to build up your dosage like this until you feel that the CBD is effectively meeting its goals, whether that’s extra focus support for your day or a sleep aid at night.

According to a review on the side effects of CBD conducted by the journal Current Drug Safety, it’s normal for human bodies to safely tolerate doses of up to 1,500 mg of CBD per day — but that doesn’t mean you should push that limit (that’s an entire bottle and a half of our 1000mg Drops!). CBD has a wide range of applications, from helping ease feelings of stress to working to reduce inflammation to improve sleep health. Ultimately, the dosage you take should meet the goals you’re trying to achieve with the CBD; finding that sweet spot may take some patient experimentation.

In the 300 mg bottle, you get 10 mg of broad-spectrum, hemp-derived CBD per dropper. If you’re starting out with a total daily dosage of 20 to 40 mg, that’s about two to six dropperfuls. In the 1,000 mg bottle, you get 33 mg per dropper — that’s more than three times the amount of CBD.

The Drops combine CBD with MCT oil from baby coconuts; both of these tinctures aim to help you relax and focus. But the new 1,000 mg bottle caters to more experienced CBD users who’ve already calibrated their comfort levels to single-serve doses well above 10 mg. In addition to those who’ve developed greater CBD tolerance, this stronger concentration may also benefit those with a greater body weight — for example, doses of roughly 10 to 20 mg can work well for people who weigh about 90 to 150 pounds, but those who weigh from 150 to about 240 pounds may prefer doses of about 20 to 30 mg.
